VAT Theatre in collaboration with European theatre network Platform 11+ commissioned a play from Indrek Hargla. The surprising “Andromeda Island” will have its rehearsed reading in the framework of the theatre’s anniversary events. Entry to the event is free!

Andromeda, the ruler of men, is the daughter of Cassiopeia and the Aithiopian king Kepheus. Cassiopeia always prided being more beautiful than the sea nymphs. The nymphs told the sea god Poseidon about this, and he revenged for the insult by sending a devastating flood to the country along with the sea monster Cetus.

In order to avoid a complete disaster the oracle ordered Andromeda to be sacrificed to Cetus. She was chained to the foot of a cliff. Fortunately Perseus was there, and he fell in love with the maiden instantly. He stayed to face the monster, and when Cetus arrived, Perseus cut its head off.

Perseus took Andromeda to her parents and asked for her hand in marriage. The parents consented with joy. The couple had six sons. Their descendants ruled Argolis, Mycenae and Thebes. Heracles was also one of Perseus and Andromeda’s descendants. Andromeda was raised to the heaven as a constellation after her death.
