PROPHET OF THE SHADOW --------------

An eerie drama

Indrek Hargla: "The action of Prophet of the Shadow takes place in 1976 in USA. It's a story about a man who has fabricated lies all this life. He is a writer and he has withdrawn himself from the world in order to finish his novel about a prophet.

He lives together with his secretary in a lonely country house among vast forests. He only has the last chapter to write. It is just then that a man appears behind his door. A man who has a talent for uncovering lies. It is also a story about a woman who loves lies. The truths that are hidden behind the lies can hurt more than the world can take."

Aare Toikka: "The title of the play hints at a secret. Assuming that the character who the title refers to actually appears in the play, one can imagine that our story is about some mystical forecaster. However, the author of the play only reveals that the main character is a writer who is finishing a novel about a prophet.

Talking about prophets one inevitably thinks of those announcing the apocalypse. One also remembers the prophets of the Old Testament. But also various writers: Vergilius who was attributed magical powers but also foreknowledge; Dante who wrote Vergilius into his work. From Estonian writers Juhan Liiv has been regarded a prophet.

The wish to see into the future seems to be inherent to people. And the darker the future, the more excitement there is. In Estonian fairy tales there is even a tale about how a man called Jaagup defrauds Death himself. The story of the prophet of the shadow is a mystery, such as is every person's unique life."
